Guest Lecturers

The Lecturers Voyages of Discovery has on board are chosen for their expertise in the region, and their ability to communicate the fascinating things they have learned in their many years in the Deep South. Accurate information and accessible language are crucial components of all talks.

We have a wide range of specialists on board, covering a full 'Antarctic curriculum'. Unlike when the ship is elsewhere, we have a lecture schedule that is so full it can truly be called an Education Programme. The lectures are given the prime time-slots in the daily programme and can be viewed, live, in the main Lounge or on the TV in one's cabin. They are also repeated the following day, on TV. Informative commentary is given over the tannoy on the outer decks when the ship is in areas of particular beauty.

The educational programme covers such topics as the natural history of penguins, the nature of the icy landscape, biology of seabirds, an introduction to the seals and whales, global climate change and Antarctica's role in our understanding of this phenomenon, various aspects of the human history of the Far South, the secrets of how animals can survive the intense cold, and threats to Antarctic conservation. We even take a look at how people have struggled to make sense of this otherworldly place in a presentation on the history of Art in Antarctica.

Further talks explore the individual research projects of our team so we may hear about satellite tracking of albatrosses, or the ecological restoration of sub-antarctic islands. All the lectures are well illustrated. Click here to see biographies of our lecturers.
